On New Year's Day, we went to a new movie theatre, (new to us as we got lost trying to find it), and saw DreamGirls. It is based on the 1981 musical about a girl group in the 50's/60's that want to make it and the pitfalls that occur. Of course, there is a striking comparison to Diana Ross and the Supremes, (as one can see from the 70's shot, Beyonce with the big hair!) but there is actually a plot to this movie. There are some points were I was thinking "oh man, they had to put another song in it.. does it help the story any?"
Eddie Murphy rocked as James "Thunder" Early, but as most agree, Jennifer Hudson stole the show. Her voice is fuller and in my opinion, better than Beyonce.
Last night, we went to the opening of Happily N'ever After. Imagine my delight to discover this is yet another Cinderella story. I have seen every version of Cinderella I can find. Of course, we knew this was likely to be a bad movie like "Hoodwinked!" with corny jokes and bad plot. It was a good movie, don't get me wrong. Hubby and I both liked it, but they could have done more with it and made it a bit more dynamic. True they had a point Prince "Charming" was an airhead, and likely most ideal are disappointing when one nears them, but it was overall a good story with a happy ending.
