Movie: The Artist

Hubby and I had another rare night out. We went to see the movie "The Artist".  Usually when movies come out, there are some that you just say... "gotta see that". This was not one that I said that about. Even though I knew that it won multiple awards at the Oscars, it was not until the recommendation of a friend that I thought it was worth a shock.

I was talking to her about my hearing and the fact that I do go to a lot of movies but don't always know what is going on as I will miss dialogue at times.  She mentioned that it was a silent movie with rare moments of talking.  So hubby and I thought we'd give it a shot. "You will know as much as I will when we watch it." was his comment as sometimes I have to ask about a scene or some part that I missed, but not this time.

I mused afterwards that it would be interesting to see what the lead thought when first offered the part.  "How would you like to be the star of our movie? You only have one line." I'm sure most people would do a double take or wonder at the catch eh? I'm sure that the actors were pushed to show that they can really act as it was a silent movie.  There were exaggerated movements and talking. I'm sure there were very few people who could not read the lips.

Either way, very enjoyable experience.

Why is there no drive thru?

Why don't the local Tim Horton's have drive thru?  I don't get it! I am in Vancouver, a huge city with million plus people. True, Timmy's is "new" here having put roots in the city maybe 8 years ago, but there are no drive thrus at any location that I have seen except one at the Queenbourgh location, and the Marine Way strip mall.  But none in downtown. Starbucks has one, but not Timmy's.

Why am I taking the time to rant about this?  Because a) I grew up in small town where you navigated/gave directions using Tim Horton's and most of them had drive thrus.    b) I have babies now.  I am NOT getting out of the car with babies just so I can get my hot chocolate and breakfast sandwich.

Hence.. this rant. Hence I end up at McDonald's.  They ALL have drive thru.  Do I necessarily WANT to go to Mickey D's? no. Do I spend most of my money there? yes. *sigh*

Baby boy just had his first solid food

The doctor told me at my visit last week that we could start him on solid foods between now and our next visit as he is 18.3 lbs!! wow! and only 5 months.  His sister has to wait though, until she is 6 months old because she is smaller.

He talked through most of it but seemed to do well with the rice cereal.  I had to hunt yesterday for the rice cereal and soft spoons to feed him with.  So far so good.  We have jars of baby food left over from my shower for games that were never played. So we have a variety to try so that we see what he likes/hates and know what to buy in the future.

Cosby Twins

This morning I was watching the Cosby show.  It was the episode when Sondra gives birth to her twins. Cosby episode

There was a lovely scene when she is chatting with her father about being a parent.  Cliff is giving her advice about being a parent and remembering when she was born.  Made me a bit sad because while there are interesting parallels (we both had b/g twins) there are a lot of things that I missed out on because my father passed away even before I got married. He never even met my husband, let alone my kids.  I sometimes wonder what he would think/be like with the kids.

Things my husband misses when he is at work #3

video

Our  babies are 5 months old today.  Here is video ... I suppose it should be called "Baby A asserts her dominance"  or "talking babies"... but either way...it's just cute.

They are in their playpen. I put them down so that I could vacuum in peace.  When I finished, I noticed that baby girl was talking to her brother while he looked straight at her.  I hadn't seen either of them do that before and thought that a picture doesn't do justice to the scene...

Garden in bloom

Last week, I was leaving the house and noticed that my "garden" is in bloom. This is odd, because A. It's February, and B. I'd forgotten that I had planted anything. So it was nice to see that my tulips are growing, however it is February. When I pointed them out to hubby, his comment was "too bad they won't last long" as we both assume that the frost will kill them before they bloom. I'm told that this is occurring in various parts throughout the country and the States.
Oh well, it was worth a shot. I realize that it has been predicted to be the mildest winter in eons, but.. it's February.

My kids are weird!

Last night we were about to take the children up to bed. They were asleep. When hubby turned to look at the children, our son was actually holding the blanket upward, above his head and covered his face. "How did he get that way?" was hubby's question. Baby boy had moved by the time I grabbed the camera to get this shot.
He was still asleep.

Earworm

An "earworm" is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head for days, often it is just a few lines only, that repeat over and over.

The other day, hubby was holding one of our children and said "hello Lena, hello Micah" to the tune of "Hello Mother, Hello Father", commonly known as the "Camp Granada song. So thanks to hubby, this song has been stuck in my head for 3 days. Unfortunately, due to copyright issues, I can't attach a link for the audio but here are the lyrics.

Hello Mother, Hello Father Lyrics

Hello mother, hello father,
Here I am at Camp Grenada.
Camp is very entertaining,
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining!

I went hiking with Joyce Fivey,
He developed poison ivy.
You remember Lennard Skynard,
He got tomain poisoning last night after dinner!

All the counselors hate the waiters,
And the lake has alligators!
And the head coach wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called 'Ulysses'.

No, I don't want (this should scare ya),
But my bunkmate has malaria!
You remember Geoffrey Hardy,
They're about to organize a searching party!

Take me home, oh mother, father.
Take me home, I hate Grenada.
Don't leave me out in the forest,
Where I might get eaten by a bear!

Take me home, I promise that I will not make noise,
Or mess the house with other boys.
Oh please don't make me stay;
I've been here one whole day!

Dearest father, darling mother,
How's my precious little brother?
Let me come home if you miss me;
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me!

Wait a minute; it stopped hailing.
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing.
Playing baseball; gee that's better.
Mother, father, kindly disregard this letter!

she's a bully...

I think that the girl has figured out that she is older and picks on her brother. We were wondering at the squawking coming from the baby monitor. Hubby went up there to find that they had both rotated 90 degrees to the left and she was kicking him in the head.

Sometimes he cries and she will cry louder as if to one up him or "put him in his place" as younger brother.

He's a mover...

My children are 4 1/2 months. We live in a 3 story townhouse, so there are 2 bouncy chairs and 2 rockers, one per floor. I take turns putting them in either the bouncy chair or the rocker so that they don't assume ownership or exclusive use of the bouncy chair (boy) and rocker chair (girl). yesterday, we were on the 1st floor where we have hardwood floor. I was feeding the girl while the boy was in the rocker. When I looked down, he had moved about a foot from the chair. Later when I was in the kitchen, I turned to see how they were doing and he had rocked 3 feet away from his original position and was able to see me from the middle of the living room. I was impressed!! and perplexed. It's a good thing that we have carpet on the other floors or who knows where that boy would rock himself to!
